The United States has the most Magento sites in our BuiltWith dataset, followed by the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Germany.
That is the short answer. But the country ranking tells a more interesting story than the winner alone.
For our first look at the Magento market, we bought BuiltWith's All Live Magento Sites dataset. It contained 151,428 unique root domains.
Our next question was simple: where are these sites?
We grouped the domains by country. The US came first, with 18,783 domains. The Netherlands came third, ahead of Germany and France. And six European countries in the top 10 had more domains combined than the US.
Before interpreting those results, however, we had to deal with the biggest group in the file: sites with no country listed.
More than half the domains have no country
Of the 151,428 domains in the export:
- 68,515, or 45.2%, had a country recorded.
- 82,913, or 54.8%, did not.
This changes how the numbers should be read.
When we say the US accounts for 27.4%, we mean 27.4% of domains with a known country. We do not mean 27.4% of every Magento store in the world.
We kept the missing locations as unknown. We did not assign countries based on domain endings, language, or hosting provider.
The resulting ranking shows where BuiltWith identified the most Magento-related domains in this export. It is a useful view of the market, but it is not a complete country census.
The top 20 countries for Magento sites
The table below counts unique root domains using the country recorded in the purchased dataset.
| Rank | Country | Domains in the export | Share of domains with a known country |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | United States | 18,783 | 27.4% |
| 2 | United Kingdom | 6,808 | 9.9% |
| 3 | Netherlands | 5,698 | 8.3% |
| 4 | Germany | 4,828 | 7.0% |
| 5 | Spain | 3,072 | 4.5% |
| 6 | Italy | 2,606 | 3.8% |
| 7 | France | 2,380 | 3.5% |
| 8 | Australia | 2,158 | 3.1% |
| 9 | India | 1,548 | 2.3% |
| 10 | Canada | 1,408 | 2.1% |
| 11 | Denmark | 1,155 | 1.7% |
| 12 | Indonesia | 1,051 | 1.5% |
| 13 | Brazil | 1,023 | 1.5% |
| 14 | Poland | 998 | 1.5% |
| 15 | Romania | 904 | 1.3% |
| 16 | Belgium | 800 | 1.2% |
| 17 | Switzerland | 749 | 1.1% |
| 18 | Austria | 638 | 0.9% |
| 19 | Greece | 609 | 0.9% |
| 20 | Sweden | 597 | 0.9% |
The top 10 countries account for 49,289 domains, or 71.9% of all domains with a known country.
The identified part of the Magento market is therefore concentrated in a relatively small set of countries.
The US leads by a wide margin
The US count is about 2.8 times the UK count and 3.3 times the Netherlands count.
For a company studying the size of the Magento installed base in individual countries, that makes the US the clearest starting point in this dataset.
But the largest website count does not automatically mean the best business opportunity.
The file does not tell us how many of these US domains belong to independent merchants, how many are working stores, or how much they spend on Magento services. One company can own several country or brand domains.
The useful next question is how many of those 18,783 domains represent active businesses with a need for the product or service being researched.
Europe deserves more attention than a single-country ranking suggests
The UK, Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Italy, and France together account for 25,392 domains.
That is 37.1% of the country-identified dataset, compared with 27.4% for the US. These six countries alone have about 35% more domains than the US.
This is a combined count for those six countries, not an estimate for all of Europe. Denmark, Poland, Romania, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, and Sweden also appear in the top 20.
The distinction matters. A country ranking puts the US comfortably at the top. A regional view reveals a large European footprint spread across several national markets.
For research, those markets deserve separate attention. The dataset does not explain their local buying behavior, payment preferences, language needs, or agency relationships. Those are questions to investigate after the ranking, rather than assumptions to attach to it.
The Netherlands is the most interesting country to investigate next
The Netherlands ranks third, with 5,698 domains. That is 870 more than Germany and more than twice the French count.
This is one of the clearest findings in the table. It raises useful questions:
- Are there many independent Dutch merchants, or do some companies operate several domains?
- How much of the installed base is supported by local Magento agencies and hosting providers?
- How many of these stores are still investing in their platform?
- Does the Netherlands remain near the top when we compare traffic or technology spending instead of site count?
The country column alone cannot answer these questions.
It also cannot tell us whether Magento has a higher adoption rate in the Netherlands than in Germany. To measure adoption, we would need the total number of ecommerce sites in each country, collected with a comparable method.
What we can say is narrower and well supported: the Netherlands has a particularly large detected Magento footprint in this dataset.
Does the ranking survive a stricter Magento filter?
Our earlier analysis found that some rows in the export had no ecommerce platform label, while others listed platforms without a direct Magento label.
So we checked the country ranking again, keeping only rows where the Ecommerce Platform field explicitly contained Magento.
The counts fell, but the order of the top 10 countries stayed the same.
| Country | All domains in the export | Domains with an explicit Magento label |
|---|---|---|
| United States | 18,783 | 16,988 |
| United Kingdom | 6,808 | 6,540 |
| Netherlands | 5,698 | 5,523 |
| Germany | 4,828 | 4,470 |
| Spain | 3,072 | 2,971 |
| Italy | 2,606 | 2,448 |
| France | 2,380 | 2,214 |
| Australia | 2,158 | 2,071 |
| India | 1,548 | 1,397 |
| Canada | 1,408 | 1,292 |
That gives us more confidence in the ordering. The top 10 is not simply a result of including rows with missing platform labels.
This filter is still a technology-detection check, not a manual verification of every storefront. It also does not resolve the missing country information.
A country ranking is a starting point for market research
If the goal is to understand where Magento has the largest detected footprint, the answer is clear within this file: the US leads, followed by the UK, the Netherlands, and Germany.
If the goal is to choose a market for an extension, hosting service, or development business, another layer of research is needed.
For each country, we would next compare:
- Active storefronts: How many domains still have a working catalog and buying journey?
- Business scale: How do traffic, catalog size, and estimated technology spending compare?
- Merchant count: How many domains belong to the same company?
- Platform investment: How common are signals such as Hyvä or Adobe Commerce B2B?
- Change over time: Which markets are adding Magento sites, and which are losing them?
Those comparisons could change the commercial ranking. A country with fewer domains might have a larger share of merchants that need a particular service.
For now, the dataset gives us two useful findings: the US is the largest individual country in the identified sample, and Europe accounts for a substantial footprint across several markets. The Netherlands, in particular, deserves a closer look.
Data and methodology
We used the purchased All Live Magento Sites — 2026-08-24 CSV from BuiltWith. Counts in this article describe that export, rather than a continuously updated live total.
The file contains 151,428 unique root domains. We grouped them by the Country field as supplied. There were 68,515 domains with a recorded country and 82,913 without one. Country shares use 68,515 as the denominator and are rounded to one decimal place.
For the additional platform check, we split the Ecommerce Platform field into its individual labels and kept rows containing the exact label Magento.
Domains are not the same as merchants, installations, or paying Adobe customers. A recorded country should not be read as a complete list of the markets served by a store or the locations of its shoppers. Missing country data may be uneven across countries, so the ranking should not be treated as a definitive global ranking.
BuiltWith's Magento report provides context on its detected website lists and export fields. Its current totals may differ from this dated export.
